Steeped in history, and set amidst the picturesque village of Hurst Green, rolling hills and quaint woodland, Stonyhurst College is well worth a visit.
One of the largest buildings in Lancashire, this imposing 16th century manor house is home to one of the most prestigious catholic boarding schools in the country. With its stunning architecture, impressive history and wonderful museum, a guided tour around this Grade I listed building comes highly recommended and is sure to make a great day out.
If the long walk along the grand avenue up to the gates of the college doesn’t fill you with awe, then following in the footsteps of a long list of well-known literary and military connections who regularly stayed there certainly will. Not only was the college used as the setting for Conan Doyle’s infamous novel “The Hound of Baskervilles”, J.R.R. Tolkien drew his inspiration for the trilogy “The Lord of The Rings” from the dramatic countryside surrounding Stonyhurst and Hurst Green.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic day trip for the two of you, or a fun-filled day out with the entire family, a visit to Stonyhurst College and the surrounding countryside is sure to make for a cracking day out! When you’ve finished your tour, why not stop off at the Shireburn Arms hotel for a lite bite or big hearty meal?
